Therapeutic indications
Active immunization of horses 6 months of age against equine influenza to reduce clinical signs and viral shedding after infection, and active immunization against tetanus to prevent mortality.
Flu
Onset of immunity: 2 weeks after the initial vaccination course.
Duration of immunity: 5 months after the initial vaccination course and 12 months after the first revaccination.
Tetanus
Onset of immunity: 2 weeks after the initial vaccination course.
Duration of immunity: 17 months after the initial vaccination course and 24 months after the first revaccination.
Contraindications
None
Adverse reactions
Rarely, diffuse hard or soft edema (maximum 5 cm in diameter) may occur at the injection site, which resolves within 2 days. In rare cases, there may be pain at the injection site, which may cause temporary functional discomfort (stiffness). In very rare cases, a local reaction may occur that exceeds 5 cm and may persist for more than 2 days. In very rare cases, a fever may appear, sometimes accompanied by fatigue and lack of appetite, for 1 day and up to 3 days, in exceptional circumstances.
Dosage and administration
Intramuscular administration.
Vaccination schedule:
Initial vaccination course – Administer 1 dose (1 ml), strictly intramuscularly, following the following scheme:
- initial vaccination course: first injection at 6 months of age, second injection 4 weeks later.
Revaccination
Flu
It is recommended that a single booster be administered to horses that have already received an initial vaccination course using vaccines containing the same types of influenza strains included in this vaccine. An initial course of vaccination is considered necessary in horses that have not been properly vaccinated initially.
The first revaccination (third dose) against equine influenza is done 5 months after the initial vaccination course. The result of this revaccination is immunity that lasts for at least 12 months.
The second revaccination is done 12 months after the first revaccination.
Intermittent use at 12-month intervals of an appropriate equine influenza vaccine containing strains A/equine-2/South Africa/4/03/ and A/equine-2/Newmarket-2/93 is recommended to maintain the levels of immunity to the components of influenza (see diagram).
Tetanus
The first revaccination is done no later than 17 months after the initial vaccination course, after which an interval of a maximum of 2 years is recommended (see the scheme in the leaflet).
In case of increased risk of infection or insufficient intake of colostrum, an additional first injection can be given at 4 months of age, followed by a full vaccination program (initial vaccination course at 6 months and 4 weeks later).
Simultaneous active and passive immunization (emergency vaccination)
The vaccine can be used in conjunction with Tetanus-Serum/Intervet to treat sick horses that have not been immunized against tetanus. In this case, the first dose (V1) of the vaccine can be administered at the same time as the appropriate prophylactic dose of TetanusSerum/Intervet, at a different injection site, using different syringes and needles. This will result in passive protection against tetanus for at least 21 days after the concurrent vaccination. The second dose (V2) of the vaccine should be given after 4 weeks. A third vaccination with Equilis Prequenza Te should be given at least 4 weeks later. Concomitant use of Equilis Prequenza Te and Tetanus-Serum/Intervet may reduce active immunity against tetanus, compared to horses vaccinated with Equilis Prequenza Te in the absence of tetanus antitoxin serum.
