Cen-a-pen suspension Many times we overlook that there are viral and infectious diseases that can attack our pets, for that reason we always remember that a visit to the veterinarian is often necessary if at any time we notice unusual behaviors in our animals and also to make sure everything is going correctly.
The presentation, extent, severity and persistence of infectious diseases in animals may be influenced and conditioned by the interaction between the environment-agent-host and the modifications of these components.
Modifications of the agent: it is possible that a bacterium can acquire greater resistance to antibiotics since the strains that survive the treatments and are eliminated can persist in hospital environments.
An infection with this type of germs could become much more serious and diffusible.
Modifications of the host, that is, of the one who contracts the infection: an immunocompromised patient can become more susceptible and activate the pathogenicity of a microorganism or allow it to acquire a greater resistance.
Modifications of the environment: wet and cold weather causes certain agents of respiratory type infections to stay longer than when the weather is warm and sunny. Floods contribute to the increase in leptospirosis, while summer favors the spread of diseases carried by insects.
The increase in the rodent population allows to favor the diseases that they carry, among others.
These diseases can be controlled with certain treatments that the veterinarian must indicate when detecting the condition.
Pharmacological properties cen-pen-suspension
Cen-a-pen suspension is composed of procaine benzylpenicillin which is a beta-lactam antibiotic that is included within the natural penicillins of group G, is exclusively parenteral and with a reduced spectrum.
It also has an action that is fundamentally bactericidal against most Gram bacteria and against a limited number of Gram- bacteria (usually in the urinary environment), as well as against certain spirochetes and actinomycetes, including in its spectrum of action.
It also contains dihydroestreptomycin that works as a bactericidal aminoglycoside antibiotic , active against Gram – and some Gram bacteria, including in its spectrum of action.
The association of both compounds generates a bactericidal effect on Gram and Gram- bacteria.
Mechanism of action: Procyan benzylpenicillin acts as a blocker of the biosynthesis of the bacterial wall. It is fixed by the covalent junction after the opening of the beta-lactam nucleus, on certain PBP enzymatic proteins. It should be noted that penicillin is active only on bacteria in the multiplication phase.
In the case of dihydroestreptomycin, it acts on the 30S unit of the ribosomes which prevents the initiation phase above all, disrupting the ordering of the messenger RNA and causing an incorrect reading of the genetic code by the transfer RNA. It also disturbs the permeability of the bacterial membrane.
Thanks to the association of both compounds, synergism is achieved due to a first effect of penicillin on the bacterial cell wall, allowing dihydroesteptomycin to penetrate more easily into the cell, thereby increasing the levels of efficacy of both compounds separately.
Some microorganisms mentioned above may become resistant to the product through the production of beta-lactamases, which break the beta-lactam ring or penicillins, causing them to be inactivated. In addition, there are cross-resistance with other aminoglycosides such as streptomycin, neomycin, gentamicin and kanamycin.
Indications according to the target species cen-pen-suspension
Cen-a-pen is a medication indicated for the treatment of bacterial, postoperative and / or secondary infections to viral infections, caused by germs sensitive to the association, for example:
